about

I was backpacking SE Asia just before the 2020 pandemic exploded. I found myself alone in a quiet room when the music stopped. What began as frustration and anxiety soon started looking like opportunity. This new global "pause" suddenly felt as if I was granted permission to "just be."

One can only be alone with his thoughts long enough before he goes completely mad or shifts his focus to something productive. Fortunately, for me, the latter won out (so far.)

I had this idea that I wanted to produce something new. Something that would echo the quiet of my new environment, which itself was also echoing a new quiet among cities and villages around the world. Though I was thousands of miles away, seeing photos of empty streets from Rome to Manhattan somehow made me feel more connected in my hushed aloneness.

I started gathering poems that felt like they were also empty streets. I contemplated this "new quiet" I was feeling. To me, it felt like the difference between an empty room and a room that had just been emptied. It felt like an overnight airport or a diner at 3AM. I made selections based more on tone than topic. These poems meander from subject to subject but I believe they all share a certain sound that resembles our new collective quiet.

Technically speaking, A Certain Sound from a Quiet Room is as low tech as it gets. Recorded entirely on my cell phone and edited with apps downloaded from the Play Store, this isn't a marvel of engineering. It's delicate and rough around the edges. It's also honest. Really, really honest. When a room gets this quiet it's hard to be anything else. So I believe this project has merit and I feel good about sharing it.

This album isn't something you're going to want to listen to at top speeds on your way to the gym. It's not something you listen to with friends. It's meant for you alone. In a quiet room.
